The Blue Smart ip22 12/30 (3) charger from Victron Energy (bpc123044022) is a professional, compact 12v 30a battery charger of the latest generation with three charging outputs and built-in Bluetooth. The Blue Smart ip22 12/30 (3) can be used with equipment in your workshop or with motor vehicles such as with (classic) cars, motorcycles, boats and motor homes.
It charges both classic 12v lead batteries and modern lithium batteries. Set-up, monitoring and updating of the charger is conveniently done via your smartphone, tablet or laptop using the VictronConnect app. The highly efficient battery charger generates four times less heat than the industry standard with up to 95% efficiency.

Charging with temperature compensation
The optimal charging voltage of a lead-acid battery varies inversely with temperature. The Blue Power ip22 charger measures the ambient temperature during the test phase and equalizes the temperature during charging. The temperature is measured again when the charger is in the low current mode, in the charge maintenance voltage phase or in the storage mode. Therefore, no special settings are needed for a cold or hot environment.
Adaptive battery management
Lead-acid batteries should be charged in three stages. These are [1] 'bulk' or constant current charging phase, [2] 'absorption' or constant voltage phase and [3] 'float' or float charge phase.
The constant voltage phase must last for several hours. This fully charges the battery and prevents premature failure due to sulfation. However, the relatively high voltage during the constant voltage phase accelerates the aging process as grid corrosion occurs on the positive plates.
Adaptive battery management reduces corrosion by shortening the constant voltage phase where possible. This is the case when charging a battery that is already (almost) full.
Storage mode: Less maintenance and aging when the battery is at rest
The storage mode is always activated when there has been no discharge within 24 hours. The charge maintenance voltage is then lowered to 2.2V/cell (13.2v for a 12v battery) to minimize gas generation and thus prevent corrosion on the positive plates. Once a week, the voltage is increased to the level of the gassing voltage. This provides a type of equalization charge that prevents electrolyte stratification and sulfation, the two main causes of premature battery failure.
Regeneration
A lead-acid battery that has not been sufficiently charged, or that has been left in a discharged state for days or even weeks, will lose power due to sulfation. If done in time, this damage can be partially reversed by charging the battery first with a low current and then later with a higher current.
- However, this regeneration procedure should only be performed occasionally on grid plate VRLA (gel and agm) batteries, as the resulting gassing dries out the electrolyte.
- VRLA bar batteries build up more internal pressure before gassing occurs. Therefore, you will lose less water when regeneration is performed on them. Therefore, some stick battery manufacturers recommend the regeneration function in the case of periodic use.
- The regeneration function can be applied to liquid electrolyte batteries to "balance" the cells and prevent acid stratification.
