The KEMO voltage converter (MPN: M015N) is an adjustable DC/DC converter that steps down a DC voltage of 6–28 V/DC to an adjustable, electronically stabilized output voltage of 3–15 V/DC. This allows devices with a lower operating voltage to be powered, for example, by a 12-V or 24-V automotive battery or a suitable power supply. The maximum output current is 1.5 A. Important for design: The input voltage must always be at least 3 V higher than the set output voltage.

Adjustable Power Supply for 12-V and 24-V Systems

  • DC/DC voltage converter for stepping down a higher DC voltage to a lower one
  • Input voltage 6–28 V DC
  • Output voltage continuously adjustable from 3–15 V DC
  • Electronically stabilized output voltage
  • Maximum output current: 1.5 A
  • Output is short-circuit-proof
  • For powering small loads from 12-V and 24-V batteries or power supplies
  • Overheating protection in case of excessive thermal load
  • Compact module dimensions of approx. 60 × 45 × 20 mm without side mounting tabs
  • Power dissipation up to approx. 3 W without a heat sink or approx. 10 W with an additional heat sink; heat sink not included

Specifically reduces DC voltage to the required value

It functions as a step-down converter and generates a lower output voltage from a higher DC input voltage. The desired voltage is set using the adjustment potentiometer on the module. A typical application is, for example, operating a 9-V device from a 12-V battery. Similarly, a load designed for 12 V can be operated via the converter on a 24-V vehicle electrical system. This is explicitly not a step-up converter. Therefore, the M015N cannot be used to step up a lower input voltage to a higher output voltage. Reversing the input and output connections will not enable this function either. A voltage reserve must also be available to ensure stable regulation. The input voltage must be at least 3 V higher than the desired output voltage. For example, an output of 9 V requires a minimum input voltage of 12 V.

Cooling and Load Capacity

The amount of power the voltage converter can handle depends not only on the output current but also on the difference between the input and output voltages. This difference, together with the flowing current, is converted into heat within the module as power loss. A maximum power loss of approximately 3 W is specified without an additional heat sink. With a suitable heat sink, approximately 10 W is possible; such a heat sink is not included in the scope of delivery. If the module heats up significantly, it must therefore be cooled accordingly. For this purpose, a cooling bracket or heat sink with a cooling surface area of approximately 60 × 60 × 20 mm or comparable dimensions is recommended. An integrated overheating protection feature reduces the output voltage if the temperature becomes too high or shuts down the module if it continues to heat up. Once the module has cooled down, it automatically returns to normal operation. The thermal design must therefore be taken into account, particularly in cases of larger voltage differences and higher continuous loads.
