Victron Lithium Batteries: Which Series Is Right for You?
All Victron lithium batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). This cell chemistry is considered particularly safe and durable. Compared to an AGM battery, it weighs significantly less while offering the same usable capacity, and you can discharge it almost completely. Victron offers three battery series, which differ primarily in how they are protected and integrated.
- LiFePO4 Smart: 12.8V and 25.6V, 50 to 200 Ah, with an external Victron BMS. Suitable for RVs, boats, and systems with Victron components.
- Lithium NG: 12.8V, 25.6V, and 51.2V, 100 to 300 Ah, with an external Victron BMS from the NG series. Suitable for larger systems up to 48V.
- SuperPack: 12.8V and 25.6V, 20 to 200 Ah, with built-in BMS. Ideal for easily replacing a lead-acid battery.
LiFePO4 Smart and Lithium NG: System batteries with Bluetooth
The Smart and NG batteries monitor each cell and balance the cells among themselves. However, an external battery management system (BMS) is responsible for shutting them down: It disconnects chargers and loads if a cell is too full, too low, or too cold. Via Bluetooth, you can view cell voltages and temperature in the VictronConnect app. You can connect multiple batteries in series for 24V or 48V, or in parallel for greater capacity—the number of batteries required is specified in the data sheet for each battery.
SuperPack: Lithium Without Additional Devices
SuperPack batteries have a built-in BMS. You don’t need any additional devices and can simply swap them out for a lead-acid battery. However, they do not feature Bluetooth display capabilities or communication with other Victron devices.
Peak Power Pack: Lithium on the Go
Peak Power Packs are portable lithium batteries with their own connectors—handy for on the go, while camping, or as a backup.
What Else You’ll Need
You can find the right BMS for LiFePO4 Smart and Lithium NG in the Victron Battery Monitoring section. All Victron battery chargers and solar charge controllers with a lithium charging profile are suitable for charging. In a vehicle, a Victron charge booster charges the lithium battery while driving.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Victron Lithium Batteries
Does a Victron lithium battery need a BMS?
LiFePO4 Smart and Lithium NG batteries require an external Victron BMS; otherwise, they are not protected. For example, the VE.Bus BMS V2 and the Lynx Smart BMS are compatible with Smart batteries, while NG batteries are compatible with BMS models from the NG series, such as the SmallBMS NG or the Lynx Smart BMS NG. SuperPack batteries already have a built-in BMS.
What is the difference between LiFePO4 Smart and Lithium NG?
Both are system batteries with Bluetooth and an external BMS. The NG series is the newer generation, offers higher capacities up to 300 Ah, and is also available as a 51.2V battery for 48V systems. It requires a BMS from the NG series.
Can I replace my AGM battery with a Victron lithium battery?
Yes. First, check whether your charger and solar charge controller support a lithium profile. In a vehicle, you’ll usually need a charge booster for charging via the alternator to ensure the battery charges fully.
Can I charge a lithium battery in freezing temperatures?
No. LiFePO4 cells must not be charged at temperatures below freezing. With Smart and NG batteries, the battery measures the temperature, and the BMS stops charging in time. Discharging is still possible in cold weather.
How many charge cycles can a Victron lithium battery handle?
Victron specifies several thousand cycles for its LiFePO4 batteries—many times more than a lead-acid battery. The exact number depends on the series and the depth of discharge and is listed in the data sheet.
Can I connect Victron lithium batteries in series or in parallel?
Yes. For 24V or 48V, connect multiple 12.8V batteries in series; for greater capacity, connect them in parallel. Be sure to use only batteries of the same type and capacity, and adhere to the maximum number specified in the datasheet.
How do I check my battery’s state of charge?
The Bluetooth display on Smart and NG batteries shows you cell voltages and temperature. To determine the exact state of charge in percent, use a battery monitor such as the Victron SmartShunt.
You can find lithium batteries from other manufacturers in the Lithium Batteries category.
