The BMV 712 Smart from Victron Energy (MPN BAM030712200) is the latest battery monitor in the BMV family. It provides precise data on parameters such as battery voltage, current, power, amp-hours consumed, state of charge, and remaining runtime at the current discharge rate. Compared to similar products, its measurement resolution is highly accurate and precise. In addition, it is equipped with a built-in Bluetooth module that allows you to access many of the battery monitor’s functions and status reports via the free VictronConnect app.

Key Features of the Victron BMV 712 Smart Battery Monitor

Integrated Bluetooth module: With its built-in Bluetooth module, the BMV Smart is already ready for the “Internet of Things.” In addition to the BMV 712, most other Victron products now also feature integrated Bluetooth. Networking, data analysis, and communication have never been more convenient than they are today.

Free Victron Bluetooth App: The VictronConnect app allows you to monitor all Victron products with a VE.Direct interface. Depending on the device, numerous parameters can be read directly via your smartphone, computer, or tablet. You can view all important data on a single screen, adjust settings, and update to the latest software. Data logging and data export options are also available. This way, you always know the status of your system.

Easy Installation: All electrical connections are made using the PCB connector on the current shunt. The shunt is connected to the monitor via a standard RJ12 telephone cable. Included in the package: RJ12 cable (10 m) and battery cable with fuse (2 m). No additional components are required. Also included are a separate front bezel for a square or round display, a safety ring for rear mounting, and screws for front mounting.

Extensive range of functions: Numerous battery monitoring functions and generously sized electronic components on the Smart BMV’s circuit board allow you to gain deep insights into the health of your battery. Furthermore, with the help of the BMV, you can identify and resolve problems—even in larger battery banks—before damage occurs.

Additional features of the BMV 712 battery monitor

  • Programmable visual and audible alarm
  • Programmable relay to shut off critical loads or switch to a generator as needed
  • A 500-amp quick-connect shunt and a connection kit
  • Selectable shunt capacity up to 10,000 amps
  • VE.Direct communication port
  • Stores a wide range of historical data that can be used to evaluate usage patterns and battery health
  • Wide input voltage range: 6.5 – 70 V
  • High current measurement resolution: 10 mA (0.01 A)
  • Additional input for measuring voltage (of a second battery), temperature, or center-point voltage, along with associated alarm and relay settings

High-resolution measurement data from up to 2 batteries

  • Current: ±0.01 A
  • Voltage ± 0.01 V
  • Ampere-hour ± 0.1 Ah
  • State of charge (0–100%) ± 0.1%
  • Remaining runtime ± 1 min
  • Temperature (0–50°C or 30–120°F) ± 1°C/°F
  • Current measurement accuracy ±0.4%

Low self-consumption

The BMV’s power consumption is only 0.7 Ah per month (1 mA) at 12 V and 0.6 Ah per month (0.8 mA) at 24 V. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, have virtually no remaining capacity left when they are discharged to the point of shutting down due to low voltage. After shutting down due to low voltage, the capacity reserve of a lithium-ion battery is approximately 1 Ah per 1,000 Ah of battery capacity. The battery will be damaged if the remaining reserve capacity is drawn from it. For example, a residual current of 10 mA can damage a 200 Ah battery if the system is left in a discharged state for more than 8 days.

Monitoring the Center Voltage

A damaged cell or battery can destroy an entire large, expensive battery bank. When batteries are connected in series, measuring the center voltage can generate a timely warning. Please also refer to the BMV manual, Section 5.2, for further information.
Victron recommends the Battery Balancer (BMS012201000) to maximize the service life of lead-acid batteries connected in series.
