The Hoymiles HIS-6L-G3 6 kW single-phase hybrid inverter (MPN: HIS-6L-G3) is the most powerful model in the single-phase HIS-(3–6)L-G3 series and combines a PV inverter, low-voltage battery connection, and backup power supply in a single unit. With a rated AC output power of 6,000 W, two independent MPPT trackers, a recommended maximum PV power of 12,000 W, and a battery connection for Li-ion and lead-acid batteries ranging from 40 to 60 V, this model is suitable for high-power single-phase PV and storage systems. Two MPPT trackers and up to 12 kW of PV power
On the PV side, the HIS-6L-G3 features two independent MPPT trackers, each with one string input. An MPPT continuously adjusts the operating point of the connected solar modules to ensure that the available solar power is fully utilized. Two separate trackers are particularly useful, for example, in module arrays with different roof orientations or varying irradiance conditions. The maximum input current per tracker is 18 A, and the maximum short-circuit current is 27 A. The usable MPPT voltage range extends from 90 to 500 V. The maximum input voltage is specified as 550 V, and the turn-on voltage as 100 V. For the HIS-6L-G3, Hoymiles recommends a maximum PV power of 12,000 W. This allows the PV generator to be sized larger than the rated AC power of 6,000 W. The specific string sizing must always remain within the permissible voltage and current limits.
Operating Modes for Self-Consumption and Targeted Battery Control
The HIS-G3 series’ intelligent energy management system supports various strategies for utilizing solar energy and battery storage. These include self-consumption mode, economy mode, backup mode, peak shaving mode, and time-of-use mode. In self-consumption mode, the generated PV energy is first used to power the connected loads. Any surplus can then be used to charge the battery storage system. Peak shaving limits grid draw during power peaks. Time-of-use mode, on the other hand, allows for time-dependent control of charging and discharging processes.
12,000 VA backup for short-term load peaks
The HIS-6L-G3 provides a separate backup output for emergency power supply. The rated output power here is also 6,000 W, and the maximum continuous output current is 27.3 A. For loads with short-term higher power requirements, the inverter can provide up to 12,000 VA for 10 seconds. Of particular note is the switchover time, specified as 0 ms. This allows the loads connected to the backup output to continue receiving power without the typical switchover pause, provided the overall system is properly configured. Which loads can actually be protected depends, among other factors, on the load power, inrush currents, battery capacity, and the design of the entire storage system.
S-Miles Cloud for Monitoring and System Supervision
The S-Miles Cloud allows you to remotely track operating data from the PV and storage system. The platform is designed to monitor system performance over extended periods and evaluate solar power generation and battery usage. Additionally, the inverter features digital inputs and outputs as well as DRM. CAN is used for battery communication.
Flat Wall Mounting and Natural Convection Cooling
Despite its 6-kW output, the HIS-6L-G3 has the same compact dimensions as the other models in the series. The enclosure measures 506 × 495 × 99 mm and weighs 17 kg. The wall-mount design and shallow enclosure depth allow for space-saving installation. Heat dissipation occurs via natural convection. The noise level is below 35 dB. The permissible operating temperature range is from -25 to +65 °C, although power output is reduced above 45 °C. With an IP66 protection rating, the housing is protected against dust and powerful water jets.
Integrated Protection Functions
The HIS-6L-G3 features several integrated protection mechanisms for PV and grid operation. These include protection against islanding, PV reverse polarity protection, insulation resistance monitoring, ground fault current monitoring, and AC overcurrent and short-circuit protection. Additionally, AC overvoltage and undervoltage protection, as well as Type II overvoltage protection on both the DC and AC sides, are provided.
