Microprocessor-controlled IUoUo charging characteristic

The Skylla-TG automatically controls the charging process via a three-stage IUoUo charging characteristic. The battery is first charged in boost mode. Once the specified boost voltage is reached, the device maintains this voltage for the corresponding charging phase and then reduces the voltage for the float charge. For the 24 V model, a boost or absorption voltage of 28.5 V and a float or maintenance voltage of 26.5 V are specified. The user manual also describes settings for the charging parameters, allowing the charging behavior to be adjusted to the battery in use within the specified limits.

Two charging outputs for the main and starter batteries

The designation (1+1) indicates the combination of a main output and an additional output for a starter battery. The device’s main output delivers a maximum of 30 A. The second output is limited to 4 A and has a slightly lower output voltage. This allows, for example, a larger 24 V service battery and a separate starter battery to be powered by a single charger.

Temperature compensation for the battery

The optimal charging voltage for a battery depends, among other factors, on its temperature. The charger therefore supports an external temperature sensor. This sensor is attached to the battery and allows the charger to adjust the charging voltage based on the measured temperature. As the battery temperature rises, the charging voltage is reduced. This is particularly important for sealed or maintenance-free batteries, as a charging voltage that is consistently too high can lead to overcharging and drying out.

Voltage Sense compensates for line losses

At high currents, cable resistance can cause a voltage drop between the charger and the battery. The charger therefore offers a Voltage Sense function that measures the battery voltage directly at the battery terminals. It can adjust its output voltage accordingly, thereby compensating for voltage losses in the battery cables. Compensation of up to 2 V is possible.

Adjustable Charging Parameters and Additional Operating Modes

These include, among other things, setting the boost and float voltages, as well as adjusting the duration of the equalization charging mode. In addition, a permanent boost mode and settings for traction batteries are provided. The battery charger can also be used as a stabilized current source. This allows operation even without a connected battery or when used with large buffer capacitors. The respective settings must be configured according to the application and the battery manufacturer’s specifications.

Protection and Monitoring Functions

The Skylla-TG features several built-in protection mechanisms for operation. These include protection against short circuits, excessive battery voltage, and excessive device or battery temperature. If the internal temperature rises, the charger can reduce its output current. If the permissible temperature is exceeded, the device shuts down and resumes operation once it has cooled sufficiently. In addition, a dry contact alarm is available. This can be used for external signaling if the battery voltage falls outside the specified range.
