The Votronic VBCS 45/30/600 Triple HV CI (MPN: 3271) combines three charging sources for 12-V vehicle electrical systems in a single compact unit: a 45-A B2B charging converter, a 30-A AC charger, and an MPPT solar charge controller for up to 600 Wp. This combined unit is designed for motorhomes, travel trailers, and specialty vehicles and automatically charges the onboard battery while driving, when connected to a 110–230-V AC outlet, and via connected solar modules. By combining the three charging functions, it reduces space requirements, wiring, and installation effort compared to separate individual devices.

45-A B2B charging converter for on-the-road use
While driving, the integrated B2B charging converter controls the charging of the onboard battery from the vehicle’s starter circuit. With this device combination, up to 45 A of charging current is available for this purpose. The permissible voltage range of the starter battery or alternator is 10.5 to 16.5 V, and the maximum input current is 63 A. The charging function is also designed for modern vehicles with voltage-regulated alternators. Activation can be triggered via D+ or an ignition signal. With this model variant, the maximum input current can be limited to 48 A. Additional limits of 19 A and 14 A are provided for use with a travel trailer. The integrated control system also takes into account the status of the vehicle’s electrical circuit. For example, if the voltage of the starter battery or alternator drops, or if the starter circuit is heavily loaded, the power consumption of the charging converter can be automatically reduced. This ensures that the onboard battery is charged in a controlled manner without placing an unnecessary load on the starter circuit.
30-A Mains Charger for Shore Power and Campsites
When a mains connection is available, the VBCS functions as an automatic battery charger. The rated operating voltage is 110–230 V AC at 45–65 Hz, with full charging power available within this range. The specified operating voltage range is 90 to 270 V AC; for brief periods of up to five seconds, voltages of up to 305 V AC are specified. The maximum power consumption of the Model 3271 is 520 W. The onboard battery is charged at a maximum of 30 A during AC operation. In addition, the integrated charge current distributor can supply up to 4 A to the starter battery. This helps maintain the starter battery’s charge, particularly during extended periods of inactivity. The AC power limit function allows you to limit the power draw from the utility grid. This is helpful, for example, at campsites and parking areas with utility connections that have lower current ratings.
MPPT Solar Charge Controller for Solar Systems up to 600 Wp
An MPPT solar charge controller is integrated for solar battery charging. Solar modules with a total power output of 50 to 600 Wp can be connected. The maximum permissible module current is 21 A, and the maximum solar open-circuit voltage is 50 V Voc. The maximum solar charging current is 43.5 A for the service battery and 4 A for the starter battery. The controller automatically searches for the optimal operating point of the connected solar modules and regularly adjusts it to current conditions. This allows the available solar power to be used for battery charging without the need for a separate solar charger. Once the onboard battery is sufficiently charged and sufficient solar power is available, excess energy can also be used to maintain the charge of the starter battery.
Charging Programs for Lead-Acid and LiFePO4 Batteries
The Kombi offers a total of nine charging programs for different battery technologies. These include four charging profiles for lead-acid, gel, and AGM batteries, as well as five programs for LiFePO4 batteries. The charging profile is selected using the switches on the front of the unit and must be matched to the type of battery being used. The microprocessor-controlled IU1oU2oU3 charging technology operates in multiple stages. In addition to the main charging phase, the charging process includes maintenance and regeneration phases, among others. For lead-acid batteries, the included temperature sensor enables temperature-dependent adjustment of the charging voltage. In LiFePO4 operation, temperature monitoring serves, among other things, to limit or shut off charging outside permissible temperature ranges. For LiFePO4 batteries, Votronic expressly requires operation with a suitable battery management system (BMS).
CI-BUS, Display Connection, and AES Output
The built-in CI-BUS interface allows the device combination to be integrated into compatible on-board management systems. Depending on the connected system, relevant operating data can be displayed centrally and certain device functions can be controlled. Additionally, connections are provided for the optional LCD Charge Control S and VBS2. For refrigerators equipped with an Automatic Energy Selector, the VBCS features an AES switching output. When sufficient solar energy is available, this output can be used to switch a compatible refrigerator to 12-V operation, allowing excess solar energy to be utilized. Alternatively, this output can also be used to power small 12-V loads.
Protection, Monitoring, and Installation
The system features microprocessor-controlled monitoring with protection against overload, overheating, overvoltage, and short circuits, among other things. In addition, it prevents battery reverse discharge as well as unintended discharge of the starter battery when the engine is off. Voltage sensor wires enable more precise measurement of the battery voltage and help the control system account for voltage losses in the connecting wires. The required sizing of cables and fuses depends on the length of the wires and the installation situation.
