GMDSS stands for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System and refers to the international maritime distress and safety radio system. To ensure a reliable power supply for this system, it is not enough to simply charge the connected batteries. It is equally important to monitor their status so that relevant information and alarm messages are available to the radio system. The Skylla-TG 24/50 GMDSS combines these functions in a single unit. The battery and the GMDSS system are connected directly to the charger. This model provides the necessary monitoring and alarm data, thereby differing functionally from a Skylla-TG unit used exclusively for battery charging.

Integrated Battery Monitoring and Remaining Runtime Calculation

A key feature of the GMDSS version is the built-in battery monitor. It monitors battery capacity and enables the determination of the remaining operating time of the connected power source. In the event of a power outage, the corresponding panel can display not only the current battery status but also the remaining runtime. The available panel information includes, among other things, DC voltage, battery current, amp-hours consumed, and “Time to go.” Additionally, alarm conditions and charger errors can be signaled.

Three-stage IUoUo charging with 50 A

The charger operates with a microprocessor-controlled IUoUo charging profile. The charging process is divided into several phases to first charge the battery with a high current and then maintain it at the charging or float voltage in a controlled manner. The 24/50 GMDSS model has a constant charging voltage of 28.5 V and a float voltage of 26.5 V. The maximum charging current is 50 A. Additionally, the charging parameters can be adjusted, and various operating modes are available. The settings must be configured according to the battery being used and the specific application.

Wide input voltage range for 120/240 V power supply

The AC input operates in a range of 90 to 265 V AC at 45 to 65 Hz. This makes the 120/240 V version suitable for a variety of mains voltages. At 110 V AC, restrictions on the available charging current apply depending on the operating conditions. The maximum input current is 20 A. At low input voltages, the available output current may be limited accordingly.
