3-phase version for 400 V three-phase power grids

The Skylla-TG 24/50 3-Phase differs from the single-phase models primarily in its power supply. This version is designed for a three-phase 400 V AC connection. This makes the charger particularly suitable for installations where a corresponding three-phase power supply is already available. The 3-phase version has an input voltage range of 320 to 450 V AC at a frequency of 45 to 65 Hz. The maximum input current is 5 A at 3 × 400 V.

Three-stage IUoUo charging with 50 A

Battery charging is microprocessor-controlled based on an IUoUo charging characteristic. First, the battery is charged during the boost phase. Once the specified boost voltage is reached, it is maintained at a constant level during the subsequent charging phase. The charger then reduces the voltage to the float charge level.

Charging the Main Battery and Starter Battery Simultaneously

In addition to the main output with full rated power, the 24 V version features a separate output for charging a starter battery. This output is electronically limited to 4 A and has a slightly lower output voltage than the main output. This allows, for example, a larger 24 V service battery and a separate starter battery to be powered by the same charger.

Temperature Compensation for Adjusted Charging Voltage

The required charging voltage of a battery depends, among other things, on its temperature. The Skylla-TG therefore supports an external temperature sensor that is attached to the battery. Based on the measured temperature, the charger can compensate the charging voltage accordingly. As the battery temperature rises, the charging voltage is reduced. This helps reduce the risk of overcharging—and the associated drying out—especially for maintenance-free batteries.

Voltage Sense compensates for voltage drops

At high charging currents, even slight resistance in the battery cables can lead to significant voltage losses. The integrated Voltage Sense function allows the battery voltage to be measured directly at the battery terminals. This enables the output voltage to be adjusted and cable losses to be compensated. Compensation of up to 2 V is possible. Voltage Sense thus supports more precise charge control, particularly with longer connection cables and high currents.

Protection Features for Reliable Operation

The Skylla-TG features various built-in protection mechanisms. These include short-circuit protection, input and output voltage monitoring, and temperature monitoring. If the internal temperature rises too high, the output current can be automatically reduced. Under extreme conditions, the charger shuts down and resumes operation once it has cooled sufficiently. The separate starter battery output is also protected against overload and short circuits.
