Voltage converters: How they work and where they are used
A voltage converter, also known as an inverter, transforms the signal (or waveform) of an electrical voltage from direct current to alternating current. This means that any electronic device can be easily charged with alternating current.
Voltage converters are important because a battery can only store electrical energy in the form of direct current. The power grid, on the other hand, supplies alternating current (230 or 400V). With an inverter, various electrical devices can be supplied with alternating current from any direct current source, such as a battery.
Inverters are mainly used on boats and in motorhomes, but are also increasingly being used in homes to utilize the electricity produced by wind turbines or solar modules.

FAQ
- What does a voltage converter do? A voltage converter transforms the signal of an electrical voltage from direct current to alternating current. This allows various electrical devices to be supplied with alternating current from any direct current source, such as a battery.
- What is the difference between a voltage converter and an inverter? The terms voltage converter and inverter both refer to a device that can convert electrical voltage from direct current to alternating current. They are used synonymously.
- How long does a battery last with a voltage converter?
Sample calculation for a 100Ah battery:
A voltage converter uses approx. 115% of the energy you need, i.e. approx. 70 watts. The battery should be discharged to a maximum of 50%. Accordingly, you have 0.5 x 100Ah x 12 volts = 600 watt hours available. If that is the only consumption, your battery will have a runtime of 600/70 = 8.5 hours. - When do you need a voltage converter? Voltage converters convert electrical energy from direct current to alternating current. This is necessary because batteries can only store energy in the form of direct current. The power grid, on the other hand, supplies alternating current. Accordingly, the energy from batteries or other DC sources must be converted to make it usable for electrical devices.
