The Smart BMS 12/200 from Victron Energy (MPN BMS210055000) for intelligent Victron lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4) has been specially developed for 12V systems with a 12V alternator. It combines a current limiter, battery coupler, and battery monitor in a robust and compact solution. The Smart BMS 12/200 monitors and protects each battery cell individually within the battery (or battery bank) and disconnects the connection to the alternator, charging sources, or DC loads in the event of low/high battery voltage or overtemperature.
The dedicated generator connection provides current limiting and one-way traffic from the alternator to the battery, so that alternators of any size (and starter batteries) can be safely connected to the Smart Lithium battery and the starter battery is protected from excessive dischargethe BMS is equipped with Bluetooth for monitoring and configuration, a remote on/off connection to switch off the BMS (and the system) via a switch and a pre-alarm contact to give a warning signal before the BMS disconnects the battery from the system.

Alternator and battery protection

The input current is electronically limited to approx. 90% of the fuse value. A 100A fuse, for example, therefore limits the input current to approx. 90A. Choosing the right fuse helps to protect the LFP battery from excessive charging current (important in the case of an LFP battery with low capacity). In addition, in the case of an LFP battery bank with a high capacity, the alternator is protected against overload (most 12V alternators overheat and fail when operated at maximum output for longer than 5 minutes).

Load/battery charger output/input (SYSTEM+ power supply socket)

this power supply socket can be used to either charge or discharge the LFP battery (i.e., via a charger or inverter) with a maximum continuous current of 200A in both directions. It can also be used as a load output, allowing DC loads to be connected directly to this connection. The connection is short-circuit proof with a peak discharge current of 400A. The Smart BMS ensures that battery discharge is switched off in the event of imminent cell undervoltage. It allows charging via this connection, but no charging algorithm can be applied internally.

Lithium-ion battery protection

excessive input voltages and transients are regulated down to a safe level. The Smart BMS stops the charging process in the event of cell overvoltage or overtemperature. It has three outputs: /p>

  • Load disconnect output: The load output can be used to control the remote on/off output of a battery protection device, inverter, DC/DC converter, or other loads.
  • Pre-alarm output: The pre-alarm output can be used as a warning when the battery voltage is low and will trigger shortly before the load disconnect output is deactivated due to cell undervoltage. It can be used to control a relay, LED, or buzzer. It can be configured as a continuous or intermittent signal.
  • Charge disconnect output: The charger output is normally high and becomes floating when the cell is at risk of overvoltage or overtemperature. The "Charger" output can be used to remotely control the on/off switching of a charger, a Cyrix Li charger relay, or a Cyrix Li Ct battery coupler.

A non-inverting or inverting on/off cable may be required.

Remote on/off, also configurable as system on/off

The remote on/off controls the charging process via the alternator, while the BMS functionality remains active regardless of the remote on/off status. The remote control can also be used as a system on/off switch. This can be configured with VictronConnect.
