Controlled IUoUo Charging

The charging process is controlled by a microprocessor and follows an IUoUo charging profile. First, the battery is charged during the boost phase. Once the specified boost voltage is reached, the charger maintains this voltage during the subsequent charging phase. Afterward, the system switches to a lower float voltage. The 24 V model has a standard boost/absorption voltage of 28.5 V and a float voltage of 26.5 V. The charging parameters can be adjusted to meet different requirements within the specified settings.

Temperature Compensation for Adjusted Charging Voltage

The optimal charging voltage for a battery depends, among other factors, on its temperature. The Skylla-TG therefore features a connection for an external temperature sensor. The sensor is mounted on the battery and allows the charger to adjust the charging voltage based on the measured temperature. As the battery temperature rises, the charging voltage is reduced. This is particularly important for sealed and maintenance-free batteries, as a charging voltage that is consistently too high can lead to overcharging and drying out.

Voltage Sense compensates for voltage drops

Especially at a high charging current of 80 A, resistance in the connecting cables can lead to a measurable voltage drop between the charger and the battery. With Voltage Sense, the Skylla-TG can measure the actual voltage directly at the battery terminals. The output voltage is adjusted based on this measurement. Cable losses of up to 2 V can be compensated for.

Adjustable Charging Parameters

The Skylla-TG offers various configuration options to adapt to different applications. These include settings for the boost and float voltages as well as the duration of the equalization charging phase. Additionally, the unit supports continuous boost charging, diode distributor compensation, and automotive battery compensation. The respective settings must be adjusted to match the connected battery. In particular, the battery manufacturer’s specified charging parameters are critical.

Integrated Protection Functions

To ensure reliable operation, the charger features several protective mechanisms. These include short-circuit protection, input protection, protection against excessive output voltage, and internal temperature monitoring. If the charger’s internal temperature rises too high, the maximum output current may be reduced. Under extreme conditions, the unit shuts down and resumes operation once it has cooled sufficiently. Additionally, the unit monitors the battery voltage and can shut down if the voltage is too high.
