100/30 or 100/50?
- BlueSolar MPPT 100/30: up to 100 V module voltage, 30 A charging current, up to 440 Wp at 12 V and up to 880 Wp at 24 V.
- BlueSolar MPPT 100/50: up to 100 V module voltage, 50 A charging current, up to 700 Wp at 12 V and up to 1,400 Wp at 24 V.
When making your choice, plan for some headroom. If you’re installing 300 Wp on your roof today and plan to expand later, the 100/50 is the better option.
Connecting Modules Correctly
With a 100 V input voltage, you can connect two standard modules in series. This halves the current in the supply line, allowing for thinner cables and lower losses. Important: Open-circuit voltage increases in cold weather. Therefore, factor in a margin and stay safely below 100 V even in winter.
Loads and Battery Protection
With a system of this size, connect larger loads directly to the battery. A Victron Battery Protect will then protect the battery from deep discharge.
Monitoring and Configuration
The BlueSolar controllers have a VE.Direct connection. Using the Bluetooth dongle from the charge controller accessories, you can view power output and charge current in the VictronConnect app; with a VE.Direct cable, you can connect the controller to a Cerbo GX.
FAQ – BlueSolar MPPT 100/30 and 100/50
How many modules can I connect?
That depends on the modules’ power rating and voltage. The module power rating should match the values listed above, and the open-circuit voltage of all modules in series must remain below 100 V, even in cold weather. You can connect multiple series in parallel.
Does the controller automatically detect 12V and 24V?
Yes, the controller detects the battery voltage upon connection. Before the first charge, however, check the app to make sure the voltage and charging profile are correct.
Can I use this to charge a lithium battery?
Yes. In the VictronConnect app, select the charging profile for LiFePO4 or set the charging voltages to match your battery.
Is it worth getting a SmartSolar instead of a BlueSolar?
The SmartSolar has built-in Bluetooth. If you plan to monitor the controller via the app anyway, you can save yourself the cost of the dongle. Electrically, both work the same way.
