Victron Chargers: An Overview of the Series
Victron Energy manufactures chargers for 12V or 24V lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium batteries. The series differ primarily in charging current, protection rating, and installation location.
- Blue Smart IP65: up to 25 A, IP65, built-in Bluetooth. For mobile use, in the garage, for motorcycles and cars.
- Blue Smart IP67: 5 to 25 A, IP67, built-in Bluetooth. For boats, engine compartments, and damp environments.
- Blue Smart IP22: 8 to 30 A, IP22, built-in Bluetooth. For dry indoor spaces and RVs.
- Phoenix Smart IP43: 16 to 50 A, IP43, built-in Bluetooth. For permanent installation and larger battery banks.
- Skylla-i: 80 to 100 A for 24V, IP21. For large 24V systems in boats and vehicles.
- Centaur: 16 to 100 A, IP20, three outputs. For rugged permanent installation.
Charging and Configuration via App
The Blue Smart and Phoenix Smart chargers have built-in Bluetooth. In the free VictronConnect app, you can select the charging profile for your battery, view the charging current and voltage, and track the charging progress.
One or more outputs
Many models are available with one output or three separate outputs. With three outputs, for example, you can charge the main and starter batteries simultaneously, with the outputs sharing the charging current. The “1+1” variant features a small second output in addition to the main output, which keeps a starter battery fully charged at the same time.
What protection rating do you need?
The protection rating indicates how well a device is protected against dust and water. IP20 and IP22 are intended for dry indoor environments. IP65 is dusttight and protected against water jets, while IP67 can even withstand brief submersion.
You can find connection cables, terminals, and other accessories in the Victron charger accessories section.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Victron Chargers
Which Victron charger is right for my RV?
The Blue Smart IP22 and the Phoenix Smart IP43 are suitable for permanent installation in a motorhome. If you also want to use the device outdoors or on different vehicles, a Blue Smart IP65 is the better choice.
How much charging current do I need?
For lead-acid batteries, the rule of thumb is a charging current of about 10 to 20% of the capacity—so for a 100 Ah battery, that’s 10 to 20 A. Lithium batteries can usually handle significantly more—check your battery’s datasheet for the maximum allowed value.
Can I charge lithium batteries with a Victron charger?
Yes. The Blue Smart and Phoenix Smart chargers have a dedicated charging profile for LiFePO4 batteries, which you can select in the app or on the device. With Victron lithium batteries, the BMS can also shut off the charger.
Can the charger stay plugged in permanently?
Yes. After the battery is fully charged, the Smart chargers switch to a float mode and keep your battery fully charged for weeks, such as over the winter.
What do (1), (3), and (1+1) in the name mean?
The number in parentheses indicates the number of outputs. (1) has one output, (3) has three separate outputs that share the charging current, and (1+1) has one main output and a small auxiliary output for the starter battery.
What do IP65 or IP67 mean?
IP65 is dustproof and protected against water jets. IP67 can also withstand brief submersion. Both are suitable for outdoor use, in the engine compartment, or on a boat.
Do I need the charger if I already have solar panels?
A solar charge controller charges your battery as long as the sun is shining. In winter or during extended periods of inactivity under cover, a charger connected to shore power ensures that the battery stays fully charged.
